In my work, I have been involved in equation-based process modelling for many years. In doing so, we help companies to better understand, design, optimize and make production processes safer.
We do this work every day for industrial customers.
But somewhere along the way, it became increasingly clear to me that this knowledge is not only valuable when someone has been working in the industry for years.
Students, operators and trainers in particular benefit from a way to understand complex processes earlier.
That is why I feel personally involved in the development of the operator of tomorrow.
If you work with process models for years, you start to look at installations differently.
You don't just see tanks, pumps, pipes, control valves or measured values. You see connections. You see cause and effect. You see how one small change later in the process can have a big impact.
That insight is valuable.
For engineers.

And especially for students who are still learning the profession.

A lot of knowledge is transferred in process technical education. Students learn about physics, chemistry, mathematics, process control, safety, and installations.
But practice remains unruly.
Not everything that is important can be shown in a real factory. You can't evoke a disturbance to learn from it. You can't deliberately make an installation unstable. You don't want to take any risks with safety, quality or production.
Nevertheless, an operator must be able to act later when a process deviates.
That's where the hole is that keeps me busy.
How do we ensure that someone can practice complex situations before he or she takes responsibility for them in practice?

Not just by looking, but by doing. By making adjustments. By seeing what happens. By making mistakes without consequences for people, installation or production.
That is important.
Because process insight is not only created by explanation. Process insight arises when you see how a process reacts.
What happens when a temperature rises?
What does a changing flow do to the rest of the installation?
Why is a system delayed?
Which choice will bring the process back to a stable situation?
What happens if you intervene too late?
You can safely investigate these kinds of questions with simulation.

That remains our work.
But I also believe that we can bring something back to education and to the people who will soon make a difference in the workplace.
