From a physical process to a working model

An equation-based flowsheeter

Start with the process. Keep the equations in view.

The Mobatec Modelling methodology describes processes in which systems exchange material and energy. It brings physical structure, species, equations, controls and dynamic simulation into one modelling workflow.

Start with a hierarchical decomposition of the process into elementary systems and physical connections. The way you partition the process determines the level of detail and influences model accuracy alongside the other modelling choices.

Superimpose the species and reactions on that physical structure. Mobatec Modeller then generates component-mass and enthalpy balances for each elementary system. You can inspect these protected balances and add the constitutive equations that describe your process.

This white-box approach keeps the equations and their topology visible. Add the control scheme, run the dynamic simulation and investigate the process response. Process knowledge, sound assumptions and appropriate model validation remain essential.

A physical foundation
Organise elementary systems in a hierarchy and connect them to represent the exchange of extensive quantities.
Species and reactions
Superimpose chemical or biological species and reactions on the physical topology, with automatic species distribution initiated at the model battery limits.
Balances and constitutive equations
Combine visible, protected component-mass and enthalpy balances with algebraic constitutive relations that you can add and edit.

From process to model

Five steps from a physical process to a dynamic simulation.

Follow the Mobatec Modelling methodology from the physical structure through species, equations and controls to an interactive simulation.

  1. Physical Topology

Define the hierarchy of elementary systems and their physical connections.

Elementary systems exchange extensive quantities through their physical connections.

The partition determines the model's level of detail and influences its accuracy alongside the other modelling choices.

  2. Species Topology

Superimpose chemical or biological species and reactions on the physical topology.

Introduce species at the model battery limits to initiate their automatic distribution through the model.

  3. Equation Topology

Combine automatically generated balances with user-defined constitutive equations.

Mobatec Modeller automatically generates component-mass and enthalpy balances for each elementary system from the physical and species topologies.

Generated balances help reduce errors but a user is free to inspect and change them if necessary.

Add or edit algebraic constitutive relations for transfer laws, kinetic rate expressions, geometry and state-variable transformations.

  4. Control Scheme

Add the information-processing units that describe the process controls.

Use transmitters, adjusters and controllers to define the control scheme and its dynamic behaviour.

  5. Dynamic Simulation Run

Run the dynamic simulation and investigate the model's response.

Interact with the running simulation and plot model variables.

Export simulation data for further use.

5 steps to a dynamic process model
The Mobatec Modelling methodology

Built for model development

Spend your effort on the process question.

Automate balance generation, inspect the equations and adapt the constitutive relations around your process.

Balances built for you

Mobatec Modeller generates component-mass and enthalpy balances automatically, removing the need to write or maintain them by hand as streams and reactions are added.

White-box transparency

Inspect the generated balances, constitutive equations and their topology. Discuss the relationships and assumptions with the people developing the model.

Constitutive equations you can adapt

Add and edit the algebraic relationships needed for your process, and reuse modelling work through custom libraries.

Work with the developers

Mobatec develops the software in house, so you can discuss your application directly with the team and tailor functionality where needed.

Build. Explore. Share.

One model. A complete working environment.

Move from a transparent flowsheet and equations to steady-state calculations, dynamic simulations and a model you can share.

Build the model

Modelling tools that keep the process visible.

Build the physical and species topologies, inspect the generated balances and define the constitutive equations that complete the model.
